This week Anne Arundel County Health Officer Dr. Nilesh Kalyanaraman discusses:
• COVID-19 status update
• Vaccine Rollout
Welcome to our weekly health update this holiday week. Safe and effective COVID vaccines have arrived in our county. At Anne Arundel Medical Center and Baltimore Washington Medical Center, hospital staff are getting the vaccine. Residents and staff at long term care facilities will start to get the vaccine soon. And at the Health department, our testing staff will start to get the vaccine. Following the CDC recommendations that just came out this week, we will be vaccinating health care workers throughout the county as more vaccines become available.
There won’t be enough vaccine for everybody during the next few months so during this holiday season, with high case rates and growing hospitalizations and deaths, please keep your risk low by celebrating only with your household. We want everybody to stay safe to benefit from the vaccine.
Celebrating with others outside your household is a high risk activity. If you choose to do so, the following steps will help lower the risk of spread:
• Limit all activity the week prior
• Get tested a few days before the gathering
• Don’t go if you’re positive
• Take all safety precautions during the gathering: wear a mask, social distance, and wash your hands
• Limit all activity the week after
• Get tested 3 to 5 days after the gathering
Remember, we’re in this together. Stay safe this holiday. Be kind to yourself and others, and mask up. We’ll see you next year.
