Disposal of Sharps (Syringes, etc.) Used in the Home

Last updated: September 24, 2019

Many individuals need to dispose of sharps (e.g., syringes, razor blades, lancets) that are used at home. This would include items such as syringes used for self administration of insulin and similar medications. Anne Arundel County has Sharps Disposal Sites. For information, click here.

If you cannot get to one of these disposal sites, the Department of Health recommends placing sharps into a widemouthed metal or heavy plastic container with a secure lid such as a coffee can. Bleach should be poured into the container which can then be sealed with a lid and discarded with household trash.

For further information, call the Environmental Health Bureau of the Anne Arundel County Department of Health at 410-222-7192.
