Position open to all qualified candidates.
Location: 711 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD 21401
Hours: Monday - Friday, 12:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Benefits: Participation in the County’s group health plan including prescription, dental, and optical, paid holidays and sick leave. Optional deferred compensation program at employee's own expense.

Job Description

Nature of Work:

Function as part of the county’s larger system of care, as a non-clinical peer-based position that engages, educates and supports youth and their families to make life changes necessary to recover from substance use disorder (SUD) or misuse conditions. By using his/her personal lived experience, connect with, validate, inspire, and support youth at risk and help minimize adverse consequences, decrease associated risky behaviors and put an emphasis on health, social and economic outcomes. In order to decrease risky behaviors and increase the fundamental overall health and well-being of Anne Arundel County youth and their families, deliver linkage to Behavioral Health services, provide SUD and misuse education/prevention strategies, teach mindfulness of life skills/self-care, offer recovery support services and give youth a trustworthy role-model. Activities are educational and coaching in nature. Assist individuals at select community sites.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or Equivalency (GED)

Experience:

Preference will be given to applicants with an associate of arts degree from an accredited college or university, especially in the human services field.

License or Certification:

Required to obtain a Certified Peer Support Specialist Certification within 18 months from date of hire from the Maryland Addictions Professional Certification Board. Employees in this classification must complete any additional training that is deemed necessary and appropriate to maintain required certification.

Notes:

Must have a minimum of two years of recovery from a substance use or co-occurring disorder. One year is acceptable with a letter from a treatment professional with personal knowledge of the candidate. No current criminal justice system involvement. Behavioral Health Services will consider the length of time since the last conviction and the type of crime. Must have a vehicle available for travel. Must have a current Maryland driver’s license with a clear driving record.

Desired or Preferred Qualifications:

Able to multitask in a fast-paced environment. Excellent time management, organizational, written and oral communication skills. Able to work independently and on a team. Have an understanding of Anne Arundel County resources. Be proficient with Microsoft Office, Excel and electronic medical records.
