Job Description

Nature of Work:

Young Adult Peer Support Specialists (YAPPS) are an integral part of the county's broader system of care. This non-clinical, peer-based role engages, educates and supports youth and their families to facilitate life changes necessary for recovery from substance use disorders or misuse. By drawing on their personal lived experiences, YAPPS connect with, validate, inspire, and assist at-risk youth, aiming to reduce adverse consequences, mitigate associated risky behaviors, and focus on enhancing health, social, and economic outcomes.

To promote overall health and wellness among the youth and families of Anne Arundel County, YAPPS provides linkage to behavioral health services, offers education and prevention strategies related to substance use and misuse, teaches mindfulness, and provides self-care resources. Offers recovery support services and serves as a trustworthy role model. Activities focus on education and coaching. Provides peer support to youth in recovery at select community sites. Must ensure compliance with the Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA) guidelines and document all interactions in the Welligent system. Conduct outreach at events like school wellness fairs and community partnership initiatives, engage with youth, assess their needs, and utilize motivational interviewing techniques to support recovery. Effective communication with stakeholders, including schools, counselors, and community providers, is vital. Distribute relevant materials and actively promote program services. Regularly follow up with participants, create age-appropriate lesson plans for youth meetings, and participate in community outreach events while maintaining a detailed schedule of all activities.

Deliver targeted education and outreach, both individually and in group settings, covering the entire spectrum of services within the substance use continuum of care. Performance will be reviewed and evaluated by the supervisor to maintain the highest standards of excellence.
