According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, teen drivers ages 16-19 are nearly three times more likely than drivers aged 20 and older to be in a fatal crash. Lack of experience and driving in poor weather conditions are contributing factors.
What Parents Can Do:
- Give your teenager extra practice behind the wheel.
- Take driver's education.
- Introduce your teenager to driving in all types of road and driving conditions.
- Spend time teaching your teenager how to check air pressure, change a tire, check the battery, check oil and transmission fluid, and windshield wiper fluid.
- Make sure your teenager's car meets all safety standards.
- Teach your child the "Rules of The Road."
- Set a good example.
