Tianeptine: What You Need to Know

Tianeptine is an unapproved drug in the U.S. with opioid-like effects. It is being falsely marketed and sold in gas stations and online as a dietary supplement. Common names include “gas station heroin” or “ZaZa Red.” Individuals with an opioid use disorder may be more likely to use tianeptine, as it is inaccurately marketed as a safer alternative to opioids and can have opioid-like effects. Tianeptine use can lead to serious health complications and even death.

What happens if you take Tianeptine?

  • Agitation
  • Drowsiness
  • Confusion
  • Sweating
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • High blood pressure
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Slowed or stopped breathing
  • Coma or death possible

Does Narcan work for Tianeptine?

The short answer is maybe. Tianeptine is not an opioid, but there is some evidence that it binds with opioid receptors and naloxone may have efficacy in treating tianeptine toxicity.

What to do if you or someone you know has taken Tianeptine?

Tianeptine use should be avoided, but if you suspect toxicity, here are steps to take:

  • Since Tianeptine binds with opioid receptors, administer naloxone
  • Call the Maryland Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222
  • If the person is having trouble breathing, loses consciousness or other signs of an overdose are present, call 911
